If accepted, when will my UShadow experience take place?
Is UShadow similar to an unpaid internship?
UShadow is a spring semester initiative. Students apply for the program in January and if accepted, are matched with their host in February. Shadowing should take place between March and April.
No, UShadow is not an internship. It is a one day shadowing experience that serves as a "pre-internship" experience. Students will shadow alumni or employer hosts of the University of Miami and each experience varies on a host's daily activities.
How am I matched with my UShadow host?
The Toppel Career Center will match qualified students based on their application responses as well as the availability of UShadow hosts.

We can assist you in an individual advising appointment and discuss ways for you to meet alumni and employers via LinkedIn, at Career Fairs and Meet-Ups, as well as company information sessions.
What types of companies and organizations participate in UShadow?
Over the years, a wide-range of companies and organizations have participated in UShadow across many different industries. These industries included but not limited to: Communication, Education, Business, Law, Engineering, Sports, Healthcare, Arts, Music Business, Architecture, and many others!
If selected, what do I talk about with my UShadow host?
UShadow hosts participate in this program because they want to help students. Therefore, your conversations will probably range a variety of different topics including advice on how to enter certain industries, successes and challenges of a particular job, as well as what a realistic day is like in specific careers.
Can I communicate with my UShadow host even after the one-day experience?
Absolutely! While UShadow is a one-day experience, we hope that you continue the professional relationship with your host even after your scheduled day. Your UShadow host is now part of your professional network, and we courage you to maintain contact with him or her throughout your professional career.
Should I ask my UShadow host for an internship or job following the one-day experience?
You should not. UShadow hosts participate in this program with the intention of teaching and educating- not hiring. It is inappropriate for you to directly ask your UShadow host for a job or internship. However, if you make a positive impression on your host, and maintain professional contact with him or her after the UShadow experience, you may be more likely to be considered for potential opportunities with that organization in the future.
Can I apply for UShadow as a Freshman or Senior?
Unfortunately, the UShadow program is for Sophomore and Junior students at the University of Miami. However, if you are interested in learning how to connect with alumni and employers in your industry, please contact the Toppel Career Center or come in for an individual advising appointment and we would be more than happy to assist you.
