Each semester, the Toppel Career Center offers a variety of programs designed to increase awareness of career paths and professional opportunities. They are conducted by outside speakers and panelists who are recognized specialists in their field. 

NOTE: All locations in the Toppel Career Center Library, unless noted.

• Prepare for Career Expo by having your resume or cover letter critiqued. Stop by the Toppel Career Center and meet with an advisor to ensure your career-related documents are top-notch!

• Alumni, locally and throughout the country, will be discussing their college experiences and career paths into their respective industries.  They will also provide advice to undergrads as to how to best utilize UM resources for a successful future after graduation.

• Are you interested in a career with a professional sports team?  This program will feature a variety of professionals who will share their experiences and responsibilities in the exciting world of sports!  Also, you will learn what it takes to land a job with your favorite South Florida team or organization.

• It can be tough to find a job as a new nurse, and this program will prepare nursing students for the job market.  Nurse recruiters and hiring managers will discuss what they look for in a resume, at a career fair, and during an interview, and recent graduates will share how they found employment.  Gain practical advice on how to succeed at the Nursing & Healthcare Networking Night and when you apply for jobs.

• A degree in psychology can lead to so many careers that in can be overwhelming to narrow down your options.  Meet graduate students and professionals who studied psychology or hire psychology majors to learn what opportunities are available to you.    Graduate students and professionals will briefly introduce themselves at the beginning of the program and then all attendees will have an opportunity to mingle over appetizers.  Students are encouraged to RSVP on HireACane (under Events, Workshops).

• Scholarships and fellowships are more than just money for tuition. In fact, many nationally competitive award programs offer paid internships, leadership training, and even job placement opportunities.  Attend this program to learn about specific opportunities available to you and how they can contribute to launching your professional career!

• Late spring and summer are a great time to apply to graduate or professional school, and you will need a strong personal statement to complete your application. Attend this program to learn strategies to write a competitive personal statement for graduate or professional school from professionals at the Kaplan test preparation company. Pizza will be served.

• Come to Toppel for a panel discussion on diversity in leadership in various careers. In a globalized community, understanding diversity issues is vital to your career development. The panel will consist of leaders in their fields who will discuss their experiences and working in a diverse culture and environment.

• How do I build a budget? What does the typical budget for someone my age look like? How much money can I expect to make from my first full-time job? How much does it cost to live in this city? How much should I put toward my credit card balance each month? What rent can I afford? How long do I have before I need to start paying off my student loans? If you have asked yourself these questions, you don't want to miss this program? The experts will provide you with insight on how to put your best foot forward in the real world.
