For students who have already secured an internship, the Toppel Internship Program will provide a
1-credit transcript notation that will be visible on University of Miami transcripts. The University of Miami Internship (UMI) course, offered fall, spring, and summer, will allow you to have work experience related to your major, career path, or possible career path/interest and it will provide recognition of the internship experience on your official transcript.
Important: Before beginning your internship, you must complete the steps outlined below.
Types of Internships:
Students can either participate in a Part-Time Internship or a Full-Time Internship.
Part-Time Internships will require at least 160 working hours. This is usually completed while maintaining a full academic course load (at least 12 credits) during any given semester. (UMI 105, 205, 305, 405, 605)
Full-Time Internships require at least 320 working hours. This is usually completed while the student is taking the summer semester off from an academic course load (typically in the summer). Registering for this course can allow for students to work a full-time internship experience. (UMI 110, 210, 310, 410, 610)
Students participate in the Toppel Internship Program for many reasons:
- To receive official University recognition for the internship
- To demonstrate a commitment to career development
- To develop stronger career-related skills and become a more knowledgeable and competitive candidate for future jobs and internships
- To evaluate the internship site for future UM interns
- To communicate to the employer that the internship experience is sponsored by the University
Steps 1-4 must be completed PRIOR to starting your internship:
Step 1: Secure the internship (by using HireACane, coming to Career Expo, participating in company information sessions, networking, etc.)
Step 2: Contact the Toppel Career Center to ensure that internship experience meets Toppel requirements (company, content of internship, hours, etc)
Step 3: Attend the MANDATORY ORIENTATION SESSION
Step 4: Complete the Toppel Internship Program Contract with Learning Objectives on HireACane (Once a student has completed and returned a Program Contract with a supervisor’s signature AND attended the mandatory orientation session, he/she will be registered for the appropriate UMI course)
Step 5: Begin Internship
Step 6: Participate in a Midway Evaluation phone conference with a Toppel staff member (to be arranged on an individual basis)
Step 7: At end of the internship, complete the Student Evaluation and Reflection on HireACane and ensure that your supervisor has completed and returned the End of Internship Employer Evaluation.
Step 8: Attend a MANDATORY REFLECTION SESSION at the completion of the internship
