Preparing for the U.S. Job Search

Many international students have the goal of remaining in the United States after they graduate and begin a career. However, there are unique challenges that international students face when it comes to searching for U.S. employment and the job search process.

 

JOB SEARCH FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS GUIDE

 

  • Begin your job search early and be prepared to devote a lot of time to it
  • Talk to your advisor at ISSS to understand your options and keep updated on regulations and timelines
  • Do your research and know the process and timelines of securing OPT and/or H-1B Visas
  • Understand the job market in your field of study
  • Develop a professional resume that reflects the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired at UM
  • Practice your interviewing skills by attending Interviewing Skills workshops and scheduling a mock interview
  • Practice networking- network with individuals In your field by attending career fairs and events and utilizing LinkedIn
  • Make an appointment with a career advisor and get assistance as you explore your interests, options, and  career plan
