Freshman Year

Get a good start on your academic career by developing sound study habits, managing your time well, getting tutoring for difficult courses, and meeting with your professors
Join at least one club or professional student organization and network
Visit your academic advisor early to find out what courses to take
Stop by the Toppel Career Center and visit our website often to find out what we offer and to participate in programs
Register on HireACane (the Toppel Career Center’s career management system) and update profile every six months
Obtain information about volunteering and internships
Attend a resume development workshop, begin creating your resume, and add to the resume each year
Make an appointment to see a career advisor and get assistance as you explore your interests, values, and abilities
Take the Self-Directed Search, complete the TypeFocus assessment (on HireACane), or take the Strong Interest Inventory (by appointment only)
Review career literature in the university library, the Toppel Career Center Resource Library, and on the internet
Go to Career Expos and Career Fairs
Obtain an interesting summer job or internship
Get involved with First Year U or Leadership Summit

Make an appointment to see a career advisor and get assistance as you explore your interests, values, and abilities

Review the graduate school application process OR tell everyone you are graduating and looking for employment

Make a list of employers who hire college graduates in your field
Send resumes and cover letters to prospective employers and set up interviews on your own
