Exploration is key to further enhance personal and professional development skills. At this phase, assess your strengths, interests, and abilities in preparation to identify a major, a career pathway, and to expand self-awareness. Participate in these activities to develop these key areas.

  • Complete career assessments and review results with an advisor; also consider utilizing Strengths Quest (please click on link for more information on SQ)
  • Participate in at least two Career Development Series session per academic year (Industry Panels)
  • Schedule an appointment through HireACane to meet with an advisor to discuss career pathways, practice interviewing, and internship and career opportunities
  • Utilize HireACane account resources: Vault Career Insider, Going Global, Type Focus
  • Utilize resources on Candid Career, Career Links, Pathbrite, Glassdoor
  • Review resources to conduct research on suggested career paths and majors, such as: What Color is My Parachute and Vault Career Insider


Conduct research, practice interviews, and participate in experiential education opportunities

To determine your next step, remember preparation is key. Take a moment to create a plan of action to guide your direction. Conduct research, practice interviews, and participate in experiential education opportunities.

  • Participate in an on-campus organization or professional association
  • Volunteer for community service project of your choice (visit the Butler Center for Service & Leadership and the Office of Civic & Community Engagement)
  • Attend and participate in a workshop session or Career Development Series session offered by the Toppel Career Center
  • Participate in experiential activities: Toppel Internship Program, UShadow, and internship opportunities
  • Conduct informational interviews with professionals within industry of interest
  • Review Toppel Guides and Handouts
  • Upload resume for critique on HireACane (Critique takes 3-5 business days) or stop by for walk-in advising Monday-Thursday, 10:00am – 4:30pm
  • Schedule appointment with career advisor to assist in tailoring application materials (Request appointment on HireACane; Alumni call 305-284-5451)


Build meaningful relationships and develop your digital footprint
Building meaningful relationships with your peers, UM alumni and employers is extremely important. Do not forget about your digital footprint, this may precede you. What is your online presence saying about you? Utilize the suggestions below to grow and enhance your professional network.

  • Activate and utilize HireACane account to search and apply for internship and full-time postings and register for upcoming events
  • Schedule an appointment to meet a career advisor to discuss action plan for job/graduate school through your HireACane account
  • Participate in workshop: Leveraging Social Media for Your Job Search
  • Create Linkedin Profile and have it critiqued by a career advisor – schedule appointment on HireACane
  • Join Linkedin groups: UM Alumni Association (UMAA), UMAA Regional Groups, and Toppel Career Center
  • Conduct informational interviews with alumni, employers, and industry professionals who work in industry of interest
  • Attend company information sessions and industry panel discussions
  • Apply and participate in On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) through HireACane job postings
  • Complete an internship and create meaningful relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and peers
  • Participate in UShadow program: Shadow industry professionals for a day!
  • Build relationships by participating in Career Expo (Fall & Spring), industry specific panels, Networking Nights, and Career Symposium
