The Toppel Career Center’s UShadow Program provides University of Miami students the opportunity to ‘shadow’ a UM alumnus or employer in the community throughout a typical workday. As a UShadow host, you have the opportunity to share industry knowledge and advice with students, while providing them with realistic insights into a certain field.
By becoming an UShadow host, you can reconnect with the University, see your professional experience in a new light and make a direct, positive impact on the professional development of young students. In addition, your organization can benefit from the additional exposure gained through working with UM students.
There are many factors involved in the uniqueness of each job shadow experience. Students may enjoy tours of your workplace, meetings with key members of your team and/or organization, learning about your specific career path, and receiving career advice from someone currently employed in their interested field. As a host employer, we encourage you to involve your student in your daily work activities as a means to assist the student in evaluating their potential career options. Students should leave their UShadow day a realistic idea of what it is like to be in your job.
Here are some suggestions and best practices and a glimpse into past UShadow Experiences
Students apply to participate in the program via an online application and the Toppel Career Center reviews applicants’ qualifications and selects students based on their indicated level of interest, commitment, and academic standing with the University. Additionally, students are asked to include their preferred industries so we can make quality connections between students and UShadow hosts.
By becoming a UShadow host, you are committing to hosting one student each Spring semester (if you are matched with a student in your industry).
