Best Practices

Looking for a way to increase your visibility on our campus? Do you need some ideas for "outside the box" programs? We have compiled a list of Best Practices to help you in planning your recruiting strategy at the University of Miami. These programs are very beneficial to our students, while at the same time helping your organization gain more exposure on campus.

EPIC Program (Employer Practice Interviews and Critiques)

Before each Career Expo, the Toppel Career Center encourages students to prepare to meet recruiters.  The EPIC Program provides opportunities for employers assist students with interviewing skills and resume development. The benefits to the employer are increased exposure and interaction with potential candidates. Several companies have hired students they met during this program!

Students are paired with a recruiter for 20 minute sessions and can choose to have a resume critique or mock interview. Employers can participate in the morning, afternoon, or all day. We handle all the scheduling and provide lunch for participating recruiters.

Alternative Options After Graduation

Panel members needed! Not sure what you wanted to do after graduation? If starting a career or continuing on to graduate school was not the right option, did you consider other exciting choices? A great deal of opportunity exists for graduates who would like to travel, volunteer, or learn more through the world of work. Did you volunteer for a senator or travel across Europe? Ever build houses for the poor or conduct research in a rain forest? Does your company have a unique one/two year fellowship program for recent graduates?

If you would like to share your alternative option with interested students, please contact Samantha Gil at 305-284-1808 or s.gil1@miami.edu about being a part of this exciting program.

Personalized Invitations for Information Sessions

While today's students are very computer savvy and use email all the time, they still like personal contact from employers. When planning your campus visit for your Company Information Session, consider mailing out personalized invitations to our students. We can help! Tell us what students you want to target (major, GPA, class standing, etc.) and we will print the labels for you. Create your invitations, put them in an envelope, attach postage and we will mail them out for you too. The benefit of doing this is that students feel like they were specifically selected to attend which increases the number of students at your session. It also strengthens your brand on campus!

Alumni Involvement

One of the best ways to gain instant credibility with our current students is by bringing back UM alumni who work in your organization. Our students will relate to them and feel more comfortable in the recruitment process. Whether you bring alumni to a career fair, information session, or campus interview, they can be one of your greatest assets.

Breezeway Table

Setting up a table in the University Center Breezeway is an excellent way to catch many students throughout the day. Whether you want to drive students to your upcoming Information Session or just want to briefly connect with students on campus, a Breezeway table is an easy way meet those needs. We provide the table. You bring your team, company information, and whatever else you need to attract students. (Hint: food, candy, giveaways are always a big hit!)

Exploring Internships

A great way to market your internship program is by having UM students who have completed an internship with your organization serve as a panelist for the Internships 101! hosted in our career center and designed to prepare students for the internship search, Exploring Internships features student panelists who share their experiences while with your organization and the skills they learned through the process. Attending students can network with previous interns and are provided with materials regarding your company and potential internship opportunities. Past panelists have represented the U.S. Department of State, UBS Financial, Lehman Brothers, Target, Vibe Magazine, NASCAR, and more!
