Jobs
Whether you are looking for a part-time job to earn some extra money or seeking your first big job after graduation, we can help! The first thing you should do is create a CaneZone account – it’s free. CaneZone is the official University of Miami job listing service and allows you to create your profile, upload resumes and cover letters, and search for jobs. You can search by industry, location, position type, and more. CaneZone is a convenient way to apply for jobs at organizations that have specifically chosen UM as a place to recruit talent.

The key to a successful job search is starting early and casting a wide net. Don’t wait until your senior year to start looking! Start networking and researching industries and companies that interest you utilizing resources within CaneZone such as Career Builder, The Vault, Going Global, H1Base Jobs, Type Focus and Career Beam. Company websites are another good source for information that will be critical during interviews. Keep in mind that CaneZone is only one resource and should be used in conjunction with other job search methods.

Internships
Not sure which profession is the right fit? Explore a career path by pursuing an internship! An internship is a supervised work experience that provides students with an opportunity to apply classroom-based learning while gaining practical work experience. One of our goals is to provide students with the resources necessary to find an internship, and the education required to succeed in it.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported that employers find their own internship programs as the most effective resource for recruiting college graduates for full-time positions. In fact, the same employers reported that about 32% of their new hires came from their internship program. Additionally, 54% of respondents said that their new hires had some internship experience.

Internships are a natural bridge from college into the workforce. An intern has the opportunity to gain work experience, develop skills, explore career options, and establish a professional network. The internship experience is valuable for both the intern and the employer. A wide variety of online and campus based resources are available to students seeking internships. They include the CaneZone system, career fairs and expos, and a multitude of books in the Toppel Library.

Paid and Unpaid Internships
Internship providers (other than government agencies and not-for-profit agencies) are required by federal law to either pay or award academic credit to their interns. Compensation must be at least minimum wage or equal out to minimum wage per hour if payment comes in the form of a stipend. At present, Federal Minimum Wage is $6.55. Be aware that many states set their own minimum wage requirements. The State of Florida minimum wage is $7.21 per hour, effective January 1, 2008.

Government agencies and not-for-profit agencies are allowed to offer unpaid/no-credit internships without violating these laws. However, we still recommend some sort of compensation.

Internships for Academic Credit
Students interested in receiving academic credit for their internships should contact their academic advisor. The Toppel Career Center does NOT award academic credit, nor does it make arrangements for the awarding of academic credit. Employers that have listed their internship as for-credit are aware that it is the responsibility of the student to facilitate the credit-granting process.
