Career Development Series

Each semester, the Toppel Career Center offers a variety of programs designed to increase awareness of career paths and professional opportunities. The workshops are most often conducted by outside speakers and panelists who are recognized specialists in their field. Examples of previous Career Development Series workshops include: Careers in the Entertainment Industry, How to Apply to Medical School, Careers in Government, and the Job Search for International Students.

Recommendation Letters: Dos and Don'ts

  • If you are planning on applying to graduate school, you should also plan on requesting letters of recommendation. Most graduate programs require at least two letters of recommendation; come to this program to find out the best way to get started and avoid any mistakes and mishaps along the way.
How to Apply to Graduate School

  • Getting prepared for the application process for graduate and professional school can be overwhelming. Come to this program to hear from several graduate admissions professionals to learn helpful tips and advice for putting together your winning application.
So You Want To Be A Law Student?

  • Making the decision to go to law school is not an easy one. This is your chance to meet outstanding University of Miami law students and get a peek into the application process and see what it's really like to be a law student.
Green Careers Panel
Monday, October 19, 5:30 pm
  • Are you interested in a Green job? Do you want to work for a company that is making positive contributions to the environment even though it may not be their main business? Attend the Green Careers panel to learn about opportunities with different companies and what it means to work for them. Panelists include representatives from Stay at Lincoln, Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Skanska Building. All majors are encouraged to attend.
Careers in Sports

  • Are you interested in working in the sports industry? Join us to meet and network with sport industry professionals. This program will feature a variety of professionals who will share their experiences and responsibilities in the exciting world of sports! Also, you will learn what it takes to land a job with your favorite team or organization.
Networking and Etiquette Dinner (Registration required on CaneZone)
Wednesday, October 28, 6:30 pm
  • This event provides an opportunity for students to interact with employers and learn appropriate behavior in a professional setting. Recruiters from a diverse group of industries will sponsor tables, sit with attendees, and enjoy a four-course meal. A speaker will guide the participants through the meal, offering tips for appropriate conversation and manners in a networking luncheon. Featuring: Jared Summers, U.S. Air Force
  • Jared Summers is a Department of Defense civilian working for the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB. Currently he is an Acquisition Program Manager assigned to the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. Jared will be speaking about opportunities within the government for business major. He will speak on his experiences thus far, share his story, and why he enjoys his job. He will also be speaking about the benefits of working for the federal government, and about how many positions they are trying to fill in the next few years.
From Study Abroad to Career Abroad: A College Student’s Guide to Gaining International Experience, a “live” webinar presented by Don Asher

  • - This "live" webinar will guide administrators and students alike through the different International options currently available. Don will cover strengths and weaknesses of study abroad, interning abroad and working abroad. He will provide tips to students on how to market their international activities on resumes and to employers during interviews.
