The Toppel Career Center continually strives to bring new events and opportunities
to University of Miami students and alumni through programs, career fairs and other
networking events. Spring Career Expo (February 25, 2010) is the kickoff to recruiting
for the semester and traditionally we host a networking event the evening before.
This year, Toppel is doing something different and hosting a Reverse Career
Fair the evening before (February 24, 2010).
What is a Reverse Career Fair? In a typical career fair, employers
set up booths and students walk around to meet with recruiters representing each
company. What if we turned the tables and had student organizations set up booths
and the recruiters are the ones who walk around to meet with students representing
each group? Employers will approach tables to network with students and possibly
gain an invitation to come speak to the group as a whole on a separate date.
The student groups in attendance will send their representatives to showcase the
group as a whole, not for personal networking purposes. The organizations that will
be invited will include professional student organizations (ex: Beta Alpha Psi,
Society for Women Engineers, etc.), cultural groups, specialized programs and centers
of excellence on campus.
What is the purpose? Toppel saw a need for this sort of event due
to the fact that employers consistently ask for exposure to professional student
groups. This is also an excellent opportunity for the students to increase their
visibility and what their groups represent on campus. It is also an opportunity
for student leaders to showcase more of their professional skills. Employers will
receive a prospectus of the registered student organizations prior to the fair in
order to do their research, similar to what we recommend students do before they
attend a traditional career fair.
Registration Fee: There is no fee for companies that are attending
Spring Career Expo. If your organization is not registered for Career Expo the registration
fee is $200.
